2023 Toyota AFL National Inclusion Carnival

Queensland will host the 2023 Toyota AFL National Inclusion Carnival when the event takes place in Brisbane from October 8-13.

The annual Toyota AFL National Inclusion Carnival is back and set to make waves in Queensland this year. This highly-anticipated event gathers the best male footballers with intellectual disabilities from eight States and Territories, all of whom have been selected from top-performing inclusion leagues and academies.

Coordinated by the AFL and AFL Queensland, and supported by APM Employment Services, the event will unfold over 72 matches featuring over 160 athletes and support staff. After a successful comeback in 2022 following a two-year pandemic hiatus, the carnival promises an even more remarkable experience this year.

South Australia and Queensland, last year’s winners of division one and two titles respectively, are eager to defend their championships. This will be the second time Queensland hosts the event, the first being in 2017.

Rob Auld, AFL Executive General Manager Game Development, emphasized that the National Inclusion Carnival is a testament to Australian football’s ability to unite people from all walks of life. He anticipates another successful event that builds on the positive impact of last year, praising Queensland’s readiness to host with “outstanding venues.”

Toyota Australia, a long-standing partner of AFL, has renewed its commitment to the event. Vin Naidoo, Chief Marketing Officer at Toyota Australia, expressed pride in supporting the inclusion initiative, highlighting Toyota’s engagement in sport from the grassroots to elite levels.

The carnival employs an engaging format. Over the first two days, the eight participating teams, each with 12 players, will engage in a ‘lightning carnival’. Based on performance, teams are then categorized into Division 1 and Division 2. Within their divisions, teams play three matches before the top two compete in the Grand Final.

Stay tuned for the full schedule and venue details, which will be released closer to the event set to take place in early October. Mark your calendars and get ready to witness Australian football at its most inclusive and exciting!
