What is recovery coaching?

Recovery, on your terms

Recovery coaching is an NDIS-funded support specifically for participants with psychosocial disability. A recovery coach works alongside you using a hope-based, recovery-oriented approach to build resilience, navigate the system, and work toward the life you want.

Recovery coaches have specialist mental health training and work alongside, not instead of, your treating clinicians. Together, we will:

  • Look at your experiences so far in your recovery journey
  • Identify your strengths and build on them
  • Help you connect with others who share similar experiences
  • Find NDIS and other services experienced in recovery-oriented support
  • Work with other providers to develop a shared plan for challenges
  • Explore services that can help you achieve the life you want

How recovery coaching works

01

Initial conversation

We start with a free, no-obligation conversation to understand your mental health journey, your goals, and what recovery means to you.

02

Recovery-oriented plan

Together, we create a plan that reflects your strengths, builds on what's already working, and sets a clear direction toward the life you want.

03

Coaching & navigation

Your coach works with you regularly, supporting you through challenges, helping you navigate the NDIS and mental health system, and connecting you with the right services.

04

Building independence

Over time, the goal is for you to feel confident managing your own recovery, with less reliance on external support and more capacity to self-direct your journey.

Recovery coaching vs support coordination

Both support your NDIS journey, but in different ways. Many participants have both in their plan.

Who it's for

Recovery coaching for psychosocial disability

Recovery coaching is specifically for NDIS participants whose primary disability arises from a mental health condition, referred to as psychosocial disability. This includes conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, PTSD, and other diagnoses that substantially impact daily functioning.

Recovery Coaching is funded under the Capacity Building budget of your NDIS plan, listed separately from Support Coordination. If you are unsure whether you have this funding, contact us and we can help you check your plan document. NDIS price guide rates are updated annually each July and are available at ndis.gov.au.

Participants with psychosocial disability

You need a psychosocial disability listed in your NDIS plan and Recovery Coaching funding under Capacity Building to access this service. If you do not yet have this funding, we can help you request it at your next plan review.

People navigating the mental health system

If you find it difficult to access the right mental health services, coordinate multiple providers, or maintain momentum in your recovery, a recovery coach provides consistent, practical support alongside your treating team.

Participants building independence

Recovery coaching is designed to reduce reliance on supports over time. If you want to build self-management skills and greater confidence in directing your own recovery, this is the right service.
